Beyond guardianship & stewardship

Our mission

The mission of the Alliance is to inspire and mobilize communities to restore and protect the living systems that sustain us all. We recognize the planet as an interconnected web of life in which every species, habitat, and ecosystem plays an essential role, and we believe humanity is not separate from nature, but an extension of it. This understanding drives our commitment to native habitat restoration, ecosystem conservation, and biodiversity revitalization through grassroots action, education, and meaningful community engagement.

Through hands-on stewardship and community-driven environmental initiatives, we transform underutilized and degraded spaces into thriving, ecologically diverse habitats that support native and migratory pollinators, wildlife, and resilient ecosystems. In response to the damage caused by irresponsible development, ecological neglect, and the loss of native landscapes, we work to restore balance between people and the natural world while cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility, connection, and long-term ecological resilience.

Our belief

We believe in conservation through participation, because lasting ecological change happens when people are directly involved in restoring the places they call home. Conservation is not something to observe from a distance; it is something to practice collectively through stewardship, education, restoration, and meaningful community engagement.

We believe every individual has the ability to contribute to ecological health and resilience through intentional, local action. Whether establishing native habitats, supporting pollinators, restoring degraded spaces, or reimagining shared landscapes, community participation is essential to building a more sustainable future.

We encourage individuals and communities alike to serve as ecological protagonists in their local landscapes, taking an active role in restoring balance between people and the natural world.

What we do

We believe communities should be more than observers of environmental change; they should be its driving force. Our role is to equip, empower, and collaborate with local people so they can restore the places they call home, strengthen their food systems, and establish the foundation for a healthier, more self-reliant community.

We restore native habitat on small sites across Cobb County: community gardens, pollinator beds, and neighborhood commons. We do it alongside the people who already use those places. And we keep a public record of every site, with its plants, its photographs, and what we did there on which day.

We keep that record because restoration takes time. A planting can take years to fill in, and it's easy to doubt work you can't watch happen. A garden that can show you what it looked like eighteen months ago makes the case better than we ever could.

But restoration is about more than the land. It's about the people who depend on it, too. We help communities near and far build the knowledge and confidence to grow their own food, whether in a backyard, on a balcony, or in a shared community garden. By teaching practical growing skills and helping neighbors cultivate spaces together, we work toward a future where people have greater control over their food, their resources, and their collective well-being.

Who we are

The Gaian Restoration Alliance was founded by Bruno Castellanos Nuñez, who serves as its Executive Director. Rooted in a deep love for nature, family, and community, Bruno's journey began with a simple but powerful realization: the health of our ecosystems is inseparable from the well-being of the wildlife and communities that depend on them. Through reading, learning, and witnessing firsthand the challenges facing our natural world, he felt compelled to turn concern into action.

Starting a nonprofit was never the original plan. But sometimes, the greatest callings begin with a willingness to do something audacious.

Inspired by the remarkable monarch butterfly, an extraordinary creature weighing just half a gram yet capable of migrating more than 3,000 miles, Bruno embraced a similar spirit of courage and determination. If something so small can accomplish something so extraordinary, what might we achieve together?

With the support of others who share this vision, the Gaian Restoration Alliance was founded to champion a simple yet vital belief: we all have a role to play in protecting the living world around us. Because restoration and conservation shouldn't begin somewhere far away. They should begin right here, in our own backyards, neighborhoods, and communities.

Our planet is vast, but our impact begins at home.

Who we work with

None of this is done alone. Our projects so far have been built with:

  • Unity North Atlanta Church and Keep Cobb Beautiful, expanding the Unity North gardens into a food forest and pollinator habitat.
  • The Georgia Native Plant Society and the City of Kennesaw, establishing a pocket pollinator garden in Kennesaw.
  • The Brookwood Commons HOA, developing a community garden and pollinator habitat in the neighborhood.

Know a patch of ground that could blossom into something beautiful?

Let's turn ordinary lawns and spaces into thriving habitats for our community and local wildlife! We'd love to hear your ideas.

Your impact in action

Your donations fund the plants, soil, tools, and educational signs that bring our restoration projects to life. They keep the Alliance and our restoration and conservation work growing and moving forward. Every contribution helps us restore habitats and ecosystems today, and build a stronger foundation for tomorrow.

Gaian Restoration Alliance is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 39-4012917).
